Contemporary Timepiece Harkening to Classic '70s Diver HorologyMay 20, 2011

Large stainless steel case. Plongeur-esque hands. Unidirectional rotating bezel. Hooded lugs. 24mm lug width. These qualities are what distinguish a classic diver's watch from the 70's - and an apt description of Fossil's AM4341 watch. This is a contemporary take on a classic, and it does excellent homage to the Omega Seamaster Megaquartz f300 - which was also a quartz movement - sans the Seamaster's 20mm lug width, exotic quartz humming movement, and 4-figure price tag.
Lume is nothing to write home about, so those who want good visibility in the dark might consider a re-lume. Still, it glows for about 2-3 hours and then it's gone.
Interesting note about the case: it's brushed on the top, polished at the edges, and pseudo-bead-blasted on the sides and back with a polished caseback. Always thought it was brushed all over, but looks like 3 types of finishing went to work on it.
Haven't tested the water resistance yet, but it should at least hold its own when going swimming or snorkeling in less than 10 feet - so much for the 10 atm rating.
I got mine as a gift from my parents at a Fossil outlet, which was nearly thirty bucks less than retail. Even so, this is an excellent watch from a designer-type brand for those searching for a beater diver watch, those looking for a retro diver look, or those who want something unique from the large-watch crowd with some subtlety. So if you're looking for a SS case, hooded lugs, a rotating bezel, reasonable lug width, and a hassle-free movement without going over $100 (or $50 if searching outlet), this is the timepiece for you.

I purchased this as a gift for my husband and I am soooo pleased with it. It's nicer looking in person. I know he is going to love it! It was $75 in stores and I saved a good bit by purchasing it from Amazon. (Paid $52.25)
