4Tough, Eye Catching, and should last forever.Sep 29, 2005
By -Keith W.-
This is my second G-Shock; my first is still chugging right along even after going through basic training, and 4 years of active duty abuse. I've had my first G-shock for about 10 years. First and foremost when we are talking G-Shock we are talking INDESTRUCTABLE. I mean back over it with a jeep, drop it over 60' onto concrete, getting it ripped off my wrist leaving me bruised and bloodied before a pin in the strap bent enough to pull loose, and finally fill it with sand and water in the desert...G-Shocks just do not quit. Other watches in the field, Timex, Seiko, etc don't have nearly the ability to weather rough conditions and treatment and come out looking and working great.

This new G-shock promises more of the same but in a more visually interesting package stuffed full of techy goodness. The bracelet and the case are standard G-shock bulky (this is no small watch) but instead of the chunky black plastic there is very nice looking two/three tone metal. From a looks standpoint it really stands out when compared to the rest of the G-shock type watches. I get lots of positive comments and questions about this watch which brings me to the coolest and most aggravating aspect of this watch.

SWEET BLUE LED lights... Yeah it's freaking cool! BUT, it's pretty useless... The lights are placed at 3 and 9 on plane with the face, so when lit the light hits the hands of the watch at about 90 degrees and fails to shed light on ANY of the recessed digital readouts effectively. I mean, the BLUE light is super cool and is great for lighting dark hallways, but it just doesn't do it's job nearly as well as the old school "indiglo" type of background illumination. It's frustrating that Casio didn't get this worked out better.

Timekeeping? Flawless, I am up in the North West and the watch has no problems communicating with Ft. Collins CO. Needless to say the watch is super accurate.

Power source? The Solar seems to work pretty well and I have yet to have a concern regarding power. The face mounted power meter lets you know where you stand and thus far even in the Cloudy Northwest there have been no power concerns.

Functions? Well there really isn't a whole lot offered but the basics are all here and they work very well. Buttons all have the standard "firm" G-shock feel to them and work well.

Overall I couldn't be happier, the Blue LED illumination is not all that effective but it's unique, the case and bracelet have a quality look and feel to them, and the watch has a great over all feel to it and should last forever.

For what it is it might seem a little spendy for this category of watch, I mean it really is just a pimped up G-shock after all, but with its Atomic and Solar features along with the handsome looks and serious toughness it's a fair value.

Four out of five stars ONLY because of the poorly executed out but SUPER COOL Blue LEDs.

5A real hitSep 22, 2005

I bought this watch as a gift for my husband. Now I am pretty sure he loves it more than he loves me. The atomic time keeping, the solar power, the world time, the automatic backlight - he loves all of it and loves to show it off to people. For the gadget-minded, this is a pretty fancy watch, and it looks classy too (although it is pretty chunky).

4A watch with great features ...Jan 09, 2008
By H. Lee "ooblydoo"
I purchased this watch on 12/27/07 but didn't receive it until 1/9/08 (due to a delay from the shipper - DHL). But once I received it, the only thing that I noticed right away (and validated what I thought before purchasing it) was the digital display being light with the dark background, making it somewhat a little more difficult to view under sunlight, but viewable indoors. I've read the other reviews and this seems to be the most common disappointment.

I didn't have a problem removing the additional links to accommodate the size of my wrist. You pretty much just need the metal stem of a thumbtack, small pliers, and a small hammer (or handle of a screwdriver). I took the pliers and held the pin (w/o the plastic portion of the thumbtack) and used the handle of a screw driver to hammer out the pin. Be sure that side of the link that you're hammering down on has the arrow (shown on the inside of each link), this is an indication for you to hammer from that specific side so the pin pops out on the other side of the link. Then remove your link(s) and hammer back the connecting pins (but not too hard, just enough to match the depth of how the other pins look on the other connected links).

Overall, I'm happy w/ this Casio G-Shock purchase. I'm a watch lover and this is my second G-Shock watch. I've been a big fan of Seiko and Bulova in the past, but now that I received this GW1200BA-1A and my other G-Shock (which I still have by the way). I'll be a big fan of Casio for a long time.

5Seriously, everything anyone could want in a "normal" watch.Mar 25, 2007

This watch has it all. It's beautiful, quite tough, super accurate and shouldn't need a battery for the "life of the watch". Technically you need to get the rubber seals replaced every 2-3 years to maintain water resistance but I'm sure it takes much longer for the seals to break down. It's also rather large, but I like it that way. I live in Denver and am "technology literate" with every gadget I've come across so I had no trouble figuring out all the functions, and there's a nice set of them.

I only came across a couple of things that made me pause while assimilating this beast on my wrist. First, the manual states that there are two basic models that work the LCD displays in opposite manors. One is default light and makes the LCD cell dark to indicate an "active" function, which is the way the manual is written, and the other way is default dark making the LCD cell light to indicate an "active" function. Once you figure out which model you have (If buying online I have no idea how to do that) its smooth sailing. The other trick is the wristband adjustment.

Unless you're a giant, you'll need to remove 1-3 links to get the watch fitting comfortably. I've done this on plenty of watches in the past but this one gave me a bit of trouble until I stopped being afraid I was going to hurt the watch. Basically the "pins" that hold the links together can only be removed from one side. They look like a squished cotter pin once removed. If you look at the back of the links (the side against your skin) you will see an arrow on one side indicating the direction the pin needs to be removed from. Just take a small jeweler's screwdriver or anything else that will fit in the hole and is quite stiff and start pushing the pin out from the side with the arrow in the direction of the arrow. I was unable to simply push the pin out but a couple gentle hammer taps on the jeweler's screwdriver did the trick.

All in all I am very happy with the watch so far and everything is working as specified, except the "Auto DST" feature which doesn't seem to be compliant with the new rules that went into effect this year, no big deal.

4Great looking, very robust but hard to readJan 12, 2008

This is very nice looking watch. I wanted the automatic time setting and solar charge, plus the multi-city time and stopwatch. I have had a G-Shock resin case watch for a number of years that has been below 230 feet seawater and had many hard bumps and still looks brand new. I wanted something dressier and didn't mind going back to analog time as long as the digital was there also.

This is a thick watch and fairly heavy on your wrist, what you would expect from the features and stainless steel construction. Although the face is very nice looking IMO, the color choices of the designers do make it difficult to see at times. Also, the "manual" is about 2 and a half inches long, inch and a half wide and more than a half inch thick and has exceedingly small type. The Baby G-Shock I got my wife has the same style of manual and I was hoping for something more useful for this as its a much more expensive watch. Casio could do much better. That and the readability of the face cost it the last star in my rating.

The setup instructions are clear, if cryptic at times, and share the non-intuitive button arrangement of the Baby G-Shock. I live in Washington state and the atomic timesetting registered a 3 (highest signal) and worked very well, both when I manually activated it and during the first nights autosetting.
